location

You will stay at our volunteer headquarters in the heart of Lugazi, Uganda, and travel to your project each day (10-20 minute drive). It is a beautiful compound just a few steps away from local shops and a five minute walk from the town market. This makes it easy for you to get the necessities you need such as bottled water, and also feel a part of the community as you support local family businesses and interact with the local people when you are out and about. The living quarters consist of individual rooms and group rooms with single and bunk beds, and a shower/toilet area. The kitchen is connected to the living quarters, where your meals will be prepared and you can learn a little about Ugandan cooking if you wish! It is a peaceful oasis to spend your evenings after volunteering at your project each day.

YOFAFO

Spend your days serving the beautiful souls in the rural villages of Lugazi, and your evenings strolling through the local market, Rolex in hand.

program details

The program options available are endless – our nonprofit partners currently operate three schools, a microfinance project, and two health clinics. We work with them to design a program just for you, whether you want to work in the field of education, finance, construction, health, social work, etc. or a mixture of those!

working with kids

Spend time interacting with kids and encouraging their social and emotional development. You can focus on music, recreation, art, or other special areas of talent you have. If you are compassionate, creative, and love working with kids, this is the program for you.

finance

Focus your time in one of the microfinance projects run by our nonprofit partners. There are many options for this program that can revolve around your level of knowledge about finance and business.

health

If you are interested in the health field, you can work in one of the health clinics run by our nonprofit partners. We can also partner you with local hospitals and other health initiatives in the area that need volunteer assistance. Depending on your preferred area of focus, we can find a perfect project for you, or schedule you to experience and contribute to a variety of health projects.

teaching/education

Work with local teachers in your field of expertise to help students learn the skills and information they need to succeed. You will be working in one of the three schools run by our nonprofit partners, each in a village nearby Lugazi. This is a great opportunity to increase your knowledge of international education while helping underprivileged students.

construction/building project

Focus on a building project based on your area of expertise, or work on one of the existing projects that needs an extra set of hands! This is a great opportunity to work with local adults and gives you the chance to truly see the impact you will leave behind. Past volunteers have built classrooms, health clinics, or even homes for elderly village members. This program has the option for a shorter duration of 1 week.

social work

Work in areas like women’s empowerment, child development, program development at schools or in villages, or other areas you are interested in. This program has many options and often times volunteers end up creating a custom project based on their own ideas.

What is included in my program fee?

The program fees above cover accommodation, food, orientation, transport, and in-country support staff during your placement. Our non-profit partners use a portion of your volunteer fee for their program development which includes purchasing materials they need to expand construction, or paying teachers and doctors, etc. Every bit of your program fee goes directly to our non-profit partners and the people you have chosen to support. Our non-profit partners are almost solely funded by volunteer fees, with occasional donations from fundraising events. When trying to justify paying your program fee, imagine what you would spend at a hotel and eating at restaurants, and think of whether you would rather that money go toward an organization that is revolutionizing their community and changing lives.

Why do I need to pay a registration fee?

A Hopeland Volunteers registration fee of US$199 is charged in addition to the program fees and is valid for 12 months from the start of your first intended placement. This fee covers your placement coordination and helps us keep our organization going so we can find amazing volunteers like you. This fee is the ONLY source of income Hopeland Volunteers receives and is very affordable compared to other volunteer programs. You could compare it to a fee that a travel agency would charge, but in our case we are doing this because we are passionate about the non-profits we work with and want to help them change lives while giving you a life changing opportunity to serve others!

Will I have any other expenses?

You will need to purchase your own airfare, travel insurance, visas, and any vaccinations you need prior to travel. You will also be responsible for your in-country transport (daily travel to and from your project and airport transport are covered in your program fee), excursions, and spending money for necessities like bottled water and optional items like souvenirs.
