Innocent Mwesigwa

Administrator, Hopeland Junior School, Kitoola
“My method of communication and management is one-on-one. You are a good leader when you can keep your people in one spirit, so they can teach lovingly.”

For over ten years, “Inno” has overseen every aspect of the 20 staff and 500+ students at the remote Primary and Secondary school in Kitoola. And still, when he walks through the school grounds, little children attach themselves to him as he rubs a head, gives high fives and buttons a child’s shirt so “he will look smart”.

Inno, who is Valence’s brother, shares the family vision: offer children a chance out of poverty by giving them an education. When the children think, “We are surrounded by sugarcane fields; can anything good come out of this place?” Inno’s response is: Provide a good education and bring in volunteers from other countries to show the children, “Ah, yes, there is hope, we can move on.”

Inno’s relaxed style of management and deep seated belief in teaching with love makes him the heart and soul of Hopeland Kitoola.

(Innocent is married to Shilla Tumwebeze. He is a graduate of the Ugandan Christian University with a degree in Developmental Studies.)
